The Beverly Hills Art Show and the Autumn BBQ Fall on the Same Weekend This Year

Canon Drive gets two setup crews this October, and they're building four blocks apart.

On the morning of October 17, canopy tents start going up along Beverly Gardens Park, the strip of grass that runs beside Santa Monica Boulevard through the middle of the city. By the next evening, a different kind of setup is underway a short walk south on Canon Drive itself, where long tables and chef stations are being arranged at The Maybourne Beverly Hills and the adjacent Beverly Cañon Gardens. Two of the city's biggest annual gatherings, one nearly as old as the Golden Triangle's modern identity and one barely a year old, are happening on the same weekend for the first time residents can point to.

A tradition from 1973 meets one from last year

The Beverly Hills Art Show has been setting up in Beverly Gardens Park since 1973, when it debuted under the name Affaire in the Gardens. This year's fall edition runs October 17 and 18, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, free to attend, rain or shine. Close to 250 artists will show work across painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, glass, jewelry, and printmaking, spread over four garden blocks along Santa Monica Boulevard. The city's prospectus places the show between Rodeo Drive and Rexford Drive, and an outdoor dining area and a wine and beer garden with live music are built into the layout.

One weekend later on the calendar, but the same weekend on paper, the second annual Beverly Hills Autumn BBQ returns October 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. This is a newer addition to the city's fall lineup, presented by The Maybourne Beverly Hills, Spago Beverly Hills, the City of Beverly Hills, and United Card Events from Chase, with proceeds benefiting No Kid Hungry. Wolfgang Puck and Byron Puck of Spago are on the chef roster, alongside Nancy Silverton of Chi Spacca and Burt Bakman of SLAB, cooking alongside a lineup of local and visiting pitmasters. Last year's inaugural event raised $50,000 for the charity. It is, by a wide margin, the newest civic tradition on this list, and it now shares a date with the oldest one.

The same street, two different afternoons

What makes the overlap worth noting for anyone who lives here isn't just the shared date. It's the shared street. Beverly Cañon Gardens, where part of the Autumn BBQ takes place, sits on the same run of Canon Drive that crosses the Art Show's footprint between Rodeo Drive and Rexford Drive. A resident who spends Saturday afternoon walking the art tents in the park can be at the Maybourne's door in time for the BBQ's opening hour the following evening without moving a car in between.

That same patch of Canon Drive has done double duty all year. Beverly Cañon Gardens spent its summer hosting Concerts on Canon, the city's free Thursday evening concert series that ran weekly from June 4 through its August 20 finale, with acts ranging from classic rock to Brazilian and Persian sets. The concert chairs came down in late August. Six weeks later, the same patch of lawn is set to host a $50,000-raising dinner benefit. It's a small piece of public land carrying a surprising amount of the city's calendar, first as a free weekly concert lawn, then as ticketed fundraiser ground, all inside a few months.

What frames the rest of fall

The October 17-18 weekend is the biggest concentration of civic activity on the calendar, but it isn't the only date worth having written down. The week before it, Greystone Mansion and Gardens hosts Inside the Mansion on October 4, a walk-through of the estate's public rooms. A week after the Art Show and BBQ weekend, the city's regular Sunday farmers market adds a seasonal spin with the Fall Funtastic Harvest Festival on October 25, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the market's usual Civic Center Drive location. Doggy Daze 90210, the pet parade and costume event that has run for more than a decade at Roxbury Park's Wiggly Field, follows in early November.

Date Event Location
Oct 4 Inside the Mansion Greystone Mansion & Gardens
Oct 17-18 Beverly Hills Art Show Beverly Gardens Park
Oct 18 Beverly Hills Autumn BBQ The Maybourne & Beverly Cañon Gardens
Oct 25 Fall Funtastic Harvest Festival Beverly Hills Farmers' Market
Early Nov Doggy Daze 90210 Roxbury Park, Wiggly Field

Laid out this way, the calendar breaks into three distinct pockets of the city rather than one continuous route. Greystone sits up in the hills on Loma Vista Drive, a separate outing from anything happening in the flats. The farmers market's harvest event stays anchored to its usual Civic Center Drive footprint, where the market has run every Sunday morning for years regardless of what else is on the calendar. Roxbury Park, home to Doggy Daze, sits south of Wilshire in a part of the city that rarely overlaps with the Canon Drive corridor at all. The Art Show and the Autumn BBQ are the exception, not the rule. They're the only two events on this list that share both a weekend and a walkable footprint, which is exactly why the overlap is worth flagging instead of assuming.

Reading the pattern for what it is

None of this is a coordinated festival built by one organizer. The Art Show is a city arts and culture production with roots going back over fifty years. The Autumn BBQ is a hospitality and charity partnership between a hotel, a restaurant, and a national hunger relief nonprofit, only one year old. They were not designed to land together. They just did, on the same weekend, on the same short stretch of pavement, in a year when the rest of the fall calendar is otherwise spread across three separate corners of the city.

For a resident deciding how to spend a Saturday and Sunday in mid-October, that's useful information on its own. Skip the art show and you might not realize a benefit dinner with some of the city's best-known chefs is happening a few blocks away the very next evening. Skip the BBQ and you might not notice that a five-decade-old art tradition set up shop within easy walking distance the day before. The rest of the season's events, from the Greystone walk-through to Roxbury Park's dog parade, are worth their own separate trips. This one weekend isn't.
